Join Us on October 8 and Help Challenge Myths about Trans People
From Laverne Cox and Caitlyn Jenner to trans & queer youth, transgender and gender-nonconforming people are in the media more than ever before, but exposure does not necessarily lead to understanding. In fact, familiarity may help spread information that is incomplete and inaccurate. Come to a PFLAG NYC book talk to change that!
Laura Erickson-Schroth, M.D., and Laura A. Jacobs, LCSW-R, will speak at PFLAG NYC at 3 p.m. on October 8 about their new book, “You’re in the Wrong Bathroom!” — And 20 Other Myths and Misconceptions About Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming People.
Come hear them discuss a range of fallacies about being trans in the United States today. Bathroom issues grab headlines, but the book covers many other myths and misconceptions, like:
- You’ve Never Met a Transgender Person
- Trans People Are “Trapped in the Wrong Body”
- All Trans People Want to Be Either Barbie or Ken
- You’re Not Really Trans If You Haven’t Had “the Surgery”
- Trans People are Mentally Ill and Therapy Can Change Them
- Trans People Are a Danger to Others, Especially Children
- Laws Support Trans People
The event is free and will take place at PFLAG NYC’s meeting in Midtown Manhattan on Sunday, October 8, at 3:00 p.m.
Jennifer Finney Boylan, author of She’s Not There and Long Black Veil, praised “You’re in the Wrong Bathroom,” calling it…
“A breath of fresh air. This book provides, with equal measures of scholarship and humanity, thoughtful pushback against the most common misconceptions, misunderstandings, and just plain lies about trans people and the people who love them. A book for everyone, You’re in the Wrong Bathroom will open hearts, change minds, and save lives.”
