Safe Schools Program
Safe Schools Program
PFLAG NYC's Safe Schools Program is an educational speaking and outreach program that promotes inclusion, understanding, equality, and non-violence in New York City schools. We work with teachers, parents, administrators, school staff, and students to help make sure that hate, bias, and discrimination have no place in the classroom.
Our trained community speakers come from all backgrounds and include straight family and friends of LGBTQ+ people and LGBTQ+ adults and youth. Through personal stories, they help teach about sexual orientation and gender identity and create a safe, respectful learning and social environment that is free of harassment for all students, including those who are LGBTQ+.
The Safe Schools Program:
- Addresses students, teachers, counselors, and parents about LGBTQ+ issues
- Dispels myths and raises awareness about issues of sexual orientation and gender identity
- Helps LGBTQ+ students find support in understanding their sexual orientation and/or gender identity
- Trains faculty and staff to understand and approach LGBTQ+ issues respectfully and accurately
- Helps parents understand LGBTQ+ issues as they relate to the developing sexuality of their children and their children’s friends and peers
- Teaches all students, faculty, and parents how to be allies

Bring us to your school
We offer classroom student presentations at the middle and high school (grades 6-12) and elementary (grades 1-5) levels and professional development workshops for educators of all grades (K-12).
Our classroom student presentations are lively and engaging events that promote tolerance and acceptance in an accessible way. In a typical program, one or more speakers tell their personal stories about their real-life experiences with things like how someone close to them came out, what it's like being the parent of an LGBTQ+ child, struggling with their identity and their own coming out, or finding support in the community around them. Our school events can be tailored to address a variety of important issues in your school, such as personal growth, community leadership, or becoming an ally.
In our professional development workshops, we discuss best practices for working with LGBTQ+ youth and their families in an effort to build communities where every adult who interacts with young people can be a part of a school-wide support system for LGBTQ+ youth.

NYC DOE Public Schools: PFLAG NYC is a registered vendor of the NYC Department of Education. For regular public schools,
program costs are covered under a central contract with the DOE, so individual public schools do not have to pay a fee. A school
official will be asked to complete documentation.
Charter Schools, Independent Schools, and Community-Based Organizations: There is a cost to deliver programs for schools
and organizations not under the NYC Department of Education. PFLAG NYC aims to make our programs as accessible as
possible, so we operate on a sliding scale. Please inquire for the specifics of our fees.
